What Star Signal Does

Star Signal shows you astronomical events visible from your location when skies are clear. This policy explains what data we collect and how we use it.

Data We Collect

• Location — Your coordinates (GPS or ZIP code) to calculate which events are visible from where you are. Stored on our server rounded to ~11km precision.
• Push token — Your device's Expo push notification token, used to send you alerts about upcoming events.
• Preferences — Your event type toggles, Bortle class, and notification settings. Stored to personalize your experience.
• Usage analytics — App launches, foreground/background activity, and screens visited, along with an anonymous installation identifier and basic app and device information. We do not send your coordinates, ZIP code, push token, or purchase history to our analytics provider, and we do not record your screen.
• Error diagnostics — Crash reports and unhandled errors, including error messages, stack traces, and app and device versions, to diagnose failures. Error reports are associated with an anonymous installation identifier. We do not automatically collect console logs.
• Purchase information — If you subscribe to Star Signal Pro, we receive your subscription status and entitlement expiration date, and store an anonymous subscriber identifier to link your subscription to your device. Payment itself is processed by Apple — we never see your name, payment card, or billing details.

Data We Do Not Collect

• Your name, email, or any account credentials
• Contacts, photos, or files on your device
• Browsing history outside Star Signal
• Precise location history — we only store your most recent location

How We Use Your Data

• Calculate which astronomical events are visible from your location
• Fetch weather data for your area to assess sky conditions
• Send push notifications about events you've opted into
• Understand which screens are used and improve the app
• Find and fix crashes and other app errors

Third Parties

Your approximate location is shared with a weather service to check sky conditions. We use third-party services for data storage and notification delivery. Subscription purchases are processed by Apple, and subscription status is managed by RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous identifier and your purchase history for this app (see RevenueCat's privacy policy). We do not sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

We use PostHog to process usage analytics and error diagnostics. These use an anonymous installation identifier rather than your name or email. Location enrichment and screen recording are disabled.

Data Retention

Your data is stored as long as you use the app. If you uninstall Star Signal, your push token becomes invalid and notifications stop. You can request deletion of your data by contacting us.
